July 2024 – roof membrane, rooflights, windows and water supply prep

July 2024 – roof membrane, rooflights, windows and water supply prep

Make sure to schedule your roof and windows for the summer they said!

Our wonderful British summer delayed the roofers so we had to delay the window installation.

The MVHR kit arrived – so we started playing with that while we waited for a few days of zero rain.

A rare sunny day in early July so we clad the rooflight upstands.

‘Bracing’ plates welded to the wind posts to tie the studwork and windows into the steel frame to prevent any buckling in the wind.

Thanks to neighbour Andy for doing such a great job welding.

And then it rained.

July 10 – eventually we got a date from Octopus for the electricity meter installation. 6th August. What a saga. It took 6 weeks to get a date after 6 weeks of waiting for EDF (who never responded).

First studwork went in for the ‘front’ windows upstairs – as requested by the Engineers to prevent any movement in a hurricane – bolted to the plates welded to the steel frame, bolted with resin anchors to the ‘dolly wall’ below and concrete screwed into the core of the Nudura wall. Bomb proof!

July 16: More window studwork going in (in the rain). Starting to get an idea how the views will be framed by the irregular width columns in between. The big beam that the windows sit on will be the bench/window seat height.

July 17. The roof won’t happen this week. They are delayed further by the British summer! So we started digging the trench for the water pipe – dismantling the in-the-way greenhouses first then the trench but the sewer pipe it crosses is only 300mm below ground so we broke it – and fixed it – before curry night. We’ll have to dig the water pipe trench deeper to clear the underside of the sewer pipe by 350mm – even though we, hopefully, won’t be using it soon!

July 18 – 23: Water pipe going in ready for the trench inspection. We got a thumbs up on the trench inspection!

July 22: A break in the weather? Just about enough for Andy, Sharon and team HITEC to start the roofing and by July 31 getting the main roofing membrane down.

July 31: Louis and Tom from The Fell Partnership show us how to install the windows properly. Thanks to them and Hird’s glazing robot Ricky.

August 2024 - electricity, roof, windows, bridge and upstairs flooring.

Good progress (by our standards at least). We got the electricity turned on, the roof finished, the windows in, the bridge in, vacuum system and insulation in upstairs. Final touches to the roof and rooflight installation: Installing upstairs windows: The bridge went in: ‘Central vacuum system’ pipework – courtesy of Beam and their super helpful […]
